What is the most common cause of hirsutism in this age group?
Idiopathic hirsutism is a diagnosis of exclusion. Depending on geographic location and ethnicity, it accounts for 5-17% of cases. Until now, the pathogenesis of IH has not been elucidated. Currently, the pathophysiology of IH is presumed to be secondary to an increase in skin 5α-reductase activity and/or alteration in androgen receptor function.
